They are milia, and she shouldn't try to ';pop'; them. She should go to a dermatologist or professional salon to have them removed, otherwise she could cause scarring. They can also advise her on the best skin care regimen for her skin type to reduce the occurance.
They sound like milia which are small, hard, ';pearly';, white bumps on the skin. Usually on the face, they can be found anywhere from the eyelid and around the eye to the lips and cheek. They are difficult to ';pop'; and are most (though not always) the result of smothering the skin with heavy skin or hair care products coupled with improper or no exfoliation of the skin.





If your g/f is older, and I'm talkin' way older...which I get the feeling she isn't...late 40's and later...accumulated sun damage can make the skin thicker thus making it harder for cells to clear creating a ';pearl'; or milia and yada, yada





OR





Genetics can play a part though it's my professional opinion that even genetic milia do not often show until there's either significant damage or mature age, etc.





Tell your g/f to try using only products that are labeled oil-free or non-comedogenic. If she has milia on the border of her lips stay away from waxy chapsticks. Try a gentle exfoliation once a week and above all use a good sunscreen.





In the end, sometimes milia cannot be removed with a good skin care regimen and must be extracted by a dermatologist or esthetician.





Just remember: Cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and/or sunscreen with noncomedogenic products. Microdermabrasion would be helpful as well as exfoliating masks but these are best left to professionals
